RE: 176 Spring Street – Exterior Changes
Dear Tamie:
The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation has reviewed the application for exterior
alterations at 176 Spring Street.
The Victorian Gothic style residence with Italianate influence was built in 1869 for Robert
Weller, a soda water manufacturer. It is a contributing building to the East Side Historic
District listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Per the Window and Door Historic District Guidelines, every effort should be made to
preserve original or historic doors as well as the associated functional and decorative
features including door frames, sills, heads, jambs and moldings. Do not alter/enclose
important architectural features such as existing sidelights or transoms.
The Foundation does not support the replacement of the door with a window. Should the
Design Review Board approve the application, it recommends that the decorative door
frames, sills, heads, jambs, and moldings be retained and the door be stored on site so that
it can be restored in the future.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
C. Christopher Armer Samantha Bosshart
