SUBJECT: Station Park Avenue Development
Thank you for speaking with us yesterday on the Station Park development proposal. We
see great potential here for the city and CDTA. We hope this is the start of a larger bike,
pedestrian, and transit friendly redevelopment in the area.
Current CDTA service in the area includes Route #451, which serves the Saratoga Springs
Rail Station and covers much of Saratoga Springs. CDTA also offers two CDPHP Cycle!
racks nearby, at the Rail Station and at the Intrada apartments. A future bus route to
Glens Falls is also planned to connect here.
The planned streetscape and traffic calming features like bumpouts will make for an
appropriately slow and safe neighborhood street. However, the site plan appears to
show 16 foot travel lanes, which we suggest narrowing to 11 feet. 11 feet is still enough
even for a CDTA bus. The saved space could also go towards bike lanes.
The biggest destination from here will surely be downtown Saratoga Springs. CDPHP
Cycle! electric bikes are perfect for the one mile ride. CDTA could work with the
developer to add a Cycle! rack on site if it is needed in addition to the one at the rail
station. Bicycle safety improvements will be needed on Washington Street to complete
this connection.
The developer should consider a Universal Access partnership (UA) with CDTA. UA
programs lead to more transit and Cycle! usage by covering the cost of CDTA services
upfront for residents (or hotel guests). This can in turn lower the need for parking and
free space for more homes.
