Hi all,
Picking up this outstanding item re the addition of decorative street lights (3 total) that were included on
the final approved subdivision plat for a two-lot subdivision at 172 Caroline St. The new owner is
following up to see if DPW/PB would consider a subdivision modification to not require installation of
the new street lights. As a reminder, the DRB and Preservation Foundation discouraged the new street
lights because of incompatibility in the neighborhood.
Thoughts on this, please? Thanks!!

Susan,
I agree that the light on the pole along Caroline St. should be removed. While it is likely a newer fixture,
it could potentially be reused elsewhere. Out of curiosity, since this area is within the historic district,
wouldn’t the preference typically be to remove cobra-style fixtures and replace them with historic-style
lights?
Also, from my understanding, the DRB and SSPF do not have purview over the public right-of-way.
Looking ahead, I think we should take a closer look at how we handle lighting in these projects. Right
now, it doesn’t seem like existing fixtures are being fully considered when additional lights are proposed
as part of PB projects. We should also be mindful of the draft MCAP goals around energy conservation
and reducing light pollution to to make sure our approach aligns with those goals.
Also just to add Jim I think has sold both lots so I don't know who is taking over the project.
Thanks,

Subject: 172 Caroline St. Subdivision
Hi all,
Please see attached subdivision plan for approved two-lot subdivision at 172 Caroline St. This plan
includes installation of two decorative street lights along Caroline and one on Nelson. The DRB and SSPF
are questioning the appropriateness of introducing these new light fixtures in this area. I did let them
know that we have these on Regent, White, and approved to be installed on Park and Cottage.
I suggested maybe removal of the existing fixture on the utility pole across the street on Caroline, but
that might be a new LED fixture.
This would require a subdivision modification. Let me know what you think.
Thanks!!
