Comments It was recently brought to my attention that the historic house
on 28 Lincoln Avenue was approved for demolition pending the
approval of the design of a new Stewart's Shop to replace it.
As a lifelong advocate of historical preservation, I do not
support this decision. Once an old building has been razed, it is
gone for good. We will never have it back.
Do you think that whatever is ultimately approved to replace the

house will still be there in 150 years? Almost certainly not. That
is the thing with most corporate architecture: It is generally
soulless. No character. These buildings are used up then
thrown away, to be replaced with another disposable building.
Don't get me wrong, I love Stewart's and shop there often for
gas, ice cream, and snacks. The Stewart's-branded products
are generally of high quality, for an agreeable price. And I
applaud the fact that Stewart's is the only ice cream shop
around that still sells FULL half-gallons of product (blocks),
rather than "false" half-gallons with the corners chopped off
(ovals).
But.
This doesn't make it OK to tear down a historic building
(admittedly in need of repair, but not too far gone), to replace it
with yet another cementboard- and PVC-sided monolith.
No future architects will ever admire structures built with
cementboard, PVC, or vinyl siding.
A genuine thanks for reading!
