Re: Historic Building Review
445 Church Street,
Greenfield Saratoga County, New York
Dear Mr. Marshall
Hudson Cultural Services (HCS) completed an assessment of the architectural character of the current structure
located at 445 Church Street in Greenfield, Saratoga County, New York. The commercial building most recently
functioned as a restaurant, and was constructed in the mid-20th century. According to County Records, the building
was built c. 1979, but real estate records indicate a construction date of 1952.
The structure is a 1 story wood frame building finished with vinyl siding, wooden clapboard and stone. The mix of
building materials indicate that the original building was enlarged in the latter portion of the 20th century. This building
lacks the characteristics of an identifiable architectural style.
These building was evaluated using the National Register Evaluation Criteria for historic significance. These criteria
evaluate the quality of the building as well as the building’s significance in American history. Also considered are
architecture, archeology, integrity of location, and if they;
(a) are associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history; or
(b) are associated with the lives of persons significant in our past; or
(c) embody distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction, or that represent the work of a
master, or that possess high artistic values, or that represent a significant and distinguishable entity whose
components may lack individual distinction; or
(d) or have yielded, or may be likely to yield, information important to prehistory or history.
Based on the examination of the available photographs and building information it is the opinion of Hudson Cultural
Services that this structure does not meet the Criteria established by the Secretary of the Interior for identifying historic
properties. This commercial building is not considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
In addition to the review of the above ground resources, HCS evaluated the property for the potential to contain
archaeological resources. Due to the nature of the built environment which includes subsurface infrastructure and
impermeable surfaces (asphalt parking areas), there is no potential for this location to contain intact archaeological
resources.
Sincerely,
Beth Selig
President, Hudson Cultural Services (HCS)
