Dear Committee Members:
The intent of this letter is to demonstrate reasons for the demolition of the currently existing home on 116
Washington St. The existing structure was modified sometime in the 1970's with an addition added on the
back, an enclosed front porch added, and vinyl siding installed. While we recognize the value of historic
structures in Saratoga Springs,this home no longer has any of the original exterior elements. Witt
Construction has inspected the home and has determined that it is structurally unsound, all exterior
windows have been removed and replaced,the original siding was replaced with vinyl,the original
interior stair case& baluster has been removed and replaced&original walls and ceilings have been
removed or encapsulated with drop ceilings and drywall. We have determined that the historic elements
of the building have been removed or compromised by remediation. There are also major structural fails
with the home; The roof ridge beam has failed,the roof rafters are not structurally sound and need to be
replaced along with the metal roof. The connection point between the exterior wall and the roof rafter has
been severely compromised and the second brick chimney at the back side of the house needs repointing
to avoid collapse. The foundation of the home has deteriorated to the point where it had to be temporarily
supported to avoid complete failure. There is nothing remaining that allows this building to make a
contribution to the historic character of the West Side. The structural failure as well as the loss of historic
integrity of the home make demolition an acceptable solution.
Witt Construction has consulted with the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation and the Saratoga
Springs Preservation Foundation (SSPF)Major Properties Committee on this matter and they have
determined that they will not oppose the demolition of the house on 116 Washington St.
We have, in good faith, sought the alternative of renovation, however we have had 114-116 Washington
St. listed for sale and priced very competitively($150K)since the summer of 2018 with no offers from
potential buyers to renovate the home.
John Witt has designed new homes in keeping with the neighborhood for these properties and we are
excited to make this block viable again and bring back some west side charm with the designs.
