The Foundation does not object to a new structure being constructed. However, it continues to have concerns about the design of the proposed structure. The corner entrance of the building is not appropriate. Historically, the main entrance is placed at the corner of a building when it is located at a street corner, not mid-block. An exception is the entrance to Bethesda Episcopal Church. The Foundation does not believe it is appropriate to have two corner entrances mid-block directly across the street from one another. In addition, the New Construction Historic District Design Guidelines also state: • New construction windows and doors should complement the window and door sizes, patterns and rhythm of neighboring historic buildings. • Façade rhythm should maintain the vertical or horizontal emphasis that is prevalent on the street The window fenestration is not consistent with the street. The rhythm of the neighboring buildings is single windows, not paired windows. In addition, the façade of the proposed building has a horizontal emphasis, whereas the prevalent emphasis on the street is vertical. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration.
