Re: Project #20260006 ZBA AREA VARIANCE – 124 Madison Street.
To Whom It May Concern:
My wife and I have been coming to Saratoga Springs for the last 10 years after some of our dear
friends moved to the area. We just fell in love with the city for its beauty, architecture and
charm. When we decided to return to NY to help take care of aging parents, we knew this was
where we wanted to live. We purchased the perfect property in June 2024. After living in it for
a year, we decided to do a home improvement project by converting our screened deck into a
four-season room. When applying for a building permit last September, we were surprised to
learn that there were legacy zoning issues with the property. So far, we have worked closely
with the Building Department and the City Attorney Real Estate Committee to remedy a number
of issues to bring them into compliance.
We have requested to be placed on the ZBA agenda to respectfully request setback relief of a
backyard shed on the rear property line that was built over 20 years ago (according to a 2004
land survey). The rear lot line backs up to an unused city owned “paper street”. The shed is
used only for storage of lawn and garden equipment and is maintained in good condition. We
wish to obtain a zoning variance to ensure that its presence is formally recognized by the City.
We thank you for your time and consideration. We also appreciate the City’s efforts to work with
residents in maintaining safe, well-kept neighborhoods and look forward to your decision.
Sincerely,
Lou and Julia Applebaum
