RE: 162 Circular Street – Demolition of Garage and New Construction of an
Accessory Structure
Dear Tamie,
The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation reviewed the application to make in-kind
repairs to the residence and remove the existing garage and construct a new accessory
building at 162 Circular Street.
The Stick Style residence at 162 Circular Street was constructed circa 1887. The building
at the rear of the property was built between 1900 and 1926. It appears on the 1926 Sanborn
Map, confirming that the building is nearly 100 years old, and is an intact example of a
vernacular auto garage. The house and garage are contributing buildings to the East Side
Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Foundation is pleased that the applicant will invest in the exterior of the residence.
However, it opposes the demolition of the garage, as accessory structures are vital to
understanding the full history of our city's development, including the transition from the
use of horses and carriages to automobiles. It recommends that the existing garage be
adaptively reused to create the community space and storage that is desired by the
applicant.
