The front gable brick house is located in an Architectural Review District and is a contributing building to the Broadway Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Based on preliminary research, the structure was built between 1884 - 1889. A wood structure appears on the 1884 Sanborn Map and the 1889 Sanborn Map shows a brick structure (see attached). The Foundation appreciates the changes the applicant has made, specifically removing the proposed store front windows and retaining the historic window openings. The Foundation does not object to the proposed addition of two new windows on the north façade as it is possible that windows were not historically located there due to the building’s proximity to the railroad. The proposed windows are in keeping with the rhythm and style of the historic window openings. The Foundation strongly objects to the proposed painting of the historic brick. Paint or other applications to historic bricks can have the unintended effect of trapping moisture as well as it requires reapplication periodically, creating an additional maintenance requirement. The Foundation also has concerns regarding the appearance of the proposed stone veneer. It should be similar in appearance to the original foundation that will be exposed. Lastly, the Foundation recommends a shed roof rather than the proposed curved roof, so it is in-keeping with the gable roof. The Foundation appreciates the applicant’s investment in this historic property. Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration.
