Karner Blue and Frosted Elgin Butterfly Habitat
On September 19, 2025, I investigated property located at 28 Garfield Avenue shown on
the attached map for the presence of Blue Lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus), habitat for the
Karner Blue (Plebejus melissa samuelis) and Frosted Elfins (Callophyrs irus) Butterflys.
My findings are that the area of the forested, vacant residential lot’s understory is
overgrown with bittersweet (Celastrus scandens) vines, Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus
quinquefolia), mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) and tall goldenrod (Solidago altissima). Blue
lupine habitat includes sandy open meadows and disturbed manmade sites. I did not find
any Blue Lupine on the site. Therefore, the site does not provide habitat for the Karner Blue
or Frosted Elfin Butterfly.
