Project Address 14 Talford Place Comments Design Review Board re 624 Broadway The potential site at 624 North Broadway offers an opportunity to provide a multi-unit building to four residents on what is arguably Saratoga’s most imposing avenue. While most of us will never reside on North Broadway, we all take pleasure in its grandeur - the houses, the sweeping lawns and the expansive streetscape. North Broadway comprises about 45-50 properties mostly residential and approximately 80 % with historic significance. Two historic houses, both brick and flat-roofed, are of particular relevance to the currently proposed design for 624 North Broadway: 649 North Broadway, 1856, Federal Style (fig. 1), and 718 North Broadway, 1865, Italianate (fig 2). The general proportions and details from these houses such as the regular cadence of windows, the dimensions and placement of balconies, the use of wood/or wood composite for surface elements provide models for innovative reinterpretation at 624 Broadway. Further the relation of the buildings to the sites - with generous setbacks - is consistent with nearly every residence on the street, the very attribute that determines the grace of the neighborhood. There is so much to work with in the existing context and so much to be gained by judicious choices. Historic continuity can underscore a dignified design at 624 Broadway.
