When we returned to Saratoga Springs in the early 80s, there were few derelict homes available as many had been purchased with the aim to restore them. Maintaining the historic character was a primary focus for these new homeowners. 'Health, history, and horses' was an ethos that was very much alive in Saratoga. Regardless of their condition, many homes are deemed good tear-downs. We’ve seen beautiful old historic homes torn down and replaced with incompatible structures that are way too big for their lot. The current structure at 624 North Broadway was built in 1968, a period in our town’s history when numerous buildings were erected with little thought to their historic character. The Red Barn at Broadway and Division St also comes to mind. North Broadway is a very special part of town. While walking there, we are often stopped by visitors who remark on the beauty of the surrounding homes. The structure at 624 North Broadway should enhance and add to its beautiful, historic surroundings. Here, the Design Review board has the opportunity to thoughtfully guide this transition. As members of Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation, we agree with their suggestion that, similar to 46 Union Avenue, the proposed building be in-keeping with the residential character of one of Saratoga’s finest thoroughfares.
