Comments Dear Members of the Design Review Board,
I am writing to state my strong opposition to the proposed
development plans for 624 North Broadway. The plans are
wholly incompatible with the defining character of the historic
street and represent an urgent threat to one of Saratoga’s most
treasured residential corridors.
The proposed building looks like a commercial development
rather than a residence and is utterly unsuited for North
Broadway. A multi-unit structure of this scale and design

belongs in a commercial district, not on one of the city’s
grandest residential avenues. Approving such a plan would set
a dangerous precedent, forever marring this irreplaceable
neighborhood and inviting future projects that erode the very
qualities that make North Broadway and Saratoga Springs
renowned worldwide.
The proposal violates both the intent and the letter of the UDO
and the Historic District Design Guidelines in the myriad ways
the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation has publicly
cited and is wholly inconsistent with the surrounding homes. In
every fundamental way, it disregards this treasured established
streetscape.
While some multi-unit residences exist on North Broadway,
they were originally built as single-family homes and have been
carefully adapted to retain the historic, residential character of
the neighborhood. This proposed design makes no such effort.
Instead, it introduces an incongruous form that would
permanently undermine the character of the street.
The inappropriate use of materials only further highlights how
far this plan deviates from the materials, scale, and setbacks
that define North Broadway.
I emphatically urge the Board to reject this proposal. North
Broadway is an irreplaceable historic resource, and it is our
collective responsibility to ensure its protection. Approval of this
plan would represent a serious failure to uphold that duty.
Thank you for your thoughtful consideration.
