Hi Julia,
I used ChatGPT to visualize an image which embodies the final design we have in mind. 😀

Dear Members of the Design Review Commission,
I am submitting this supplemental request in connection with the ongoing porch renovation at 106
Van Dam Street, a property located within the Architectural Review District. The intent of this
project is to restore and enhance the original character of the porch while ensuring structural
integrity and long-term durability. All proposed changes aim to maintain consistency with the
architectural style of the home and neighborhood.

Replace the porch floor with new natural pine boards, stained and sealed.
Replace the ceiling using in-kind natural pine boards, stained and finished with polyurethane.
Replace the stairs using natural stained pine.
Replace existing posts with painted white wood posts in a traditional style.
Remove enclosed windows on each side of the porch to restore the original open-air design.
Replace the solid lower walls with balustrade-style bannisters, painted white, to match the
home’s character.
Install a natural wood porch swing, appropriate in scale and design.
Replace front siding within the porch area with Wedgewood-colored vinyl shake siding to
achieve a clean, consistent aesthetic.
Materials and Design Intent
All materials have been selected with respect to the original style of the home and surrounding
neighborhood. The updates reflect a commitment to:
Using natural wood where structurally feasible (floors, ceilings, railings, and posts).
Ensuring code compliance and visual coherence with painted wood railings and open
sightlines.
Use of vinyl shake siding to the front-facing portion of the porch area, with a high-quality
shake pattern and historically appropriate color (Wedgewood blue).
We believe this scope strikes a balance between historical preser vation and practical restoration,
while ensuring long-term durability and neighborhood consistency. We respectfully request the
Commission's review and approval of this updated scope of work.
Please let me know if any additional documentation or visuals are required. I'm happy to provide
architectural sketches, material samples, or photographs as needed.
