RE: 33-35 Caroline Street – New Construction
Dear Tamie,
The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation reviewed the most recent revised plans for the
proposed new construction at 33-35 Caroline Street.
The Foundation continues to object to the sixth floor as proposed because it is not compatible
with the historic form and context of the site and neighboring properties. The Foundation
continues to advocate for a four-story structure with a fifth floor set back.
The proposed design of fifth and sixth stories do not relate to the design below, specifically the
window and door fenestration. The proposed copper cladding of the fifth and sixth stories is
an improvement over the previous proposed white cladding. However, the Foundation strongly
recommends a sample of the E-Z Loc Classic Copper be provided in advance of approval to
confirm the color represented in the renderings is accurate.
In addition, the Foundation objects to the proposed paired doors with raised panels and arched
topped panes. It recommends simple modern doors that reflect the period of construction and
are in keeping with the style of the building.
There are many design features of the building that need greater detail provided prior to final
approval, such as the design and materials of the doors, cornice, ornamental corner medallion,
and the decorative details above the Kearney’s Block entrance on Caroline Street. Lastly, the
apostrophe should be removed from the name.
Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration.
Sincerely,
Michele Funiciello Samantha Bosshart
