Please contact IT Support if you need assistance determining if it's a threat before opening attachments or clicking any links. Dear Susan, I sent a letter via the online form but it doesn't allow for a large enough word count so I'm sending you the full letter here. I am writing to express my concerns regarding the Washington Street Land Disturbance Activity, specifically as it relates to the proposed swale and its potential impact on the large oak tree located on my property line. I appreciate the opportunity to provide input on this project and would like to emphasize the importance of thoughtful consideration for the existing natural landscape. My primary concern is the survival of the oak tree on my property, which is in close proximity to the massive pine tree currently marked to be saved. Based on information provided by an arborist who recently visited the property, no earth-moving or deep digging should occur within 12 feet of the tree's canopy. Given these parameters, I struggle to see how both trees can survive long-term with a swale dug between them. The proximity of such earth disturbance to these significant trees poses a serious threat to their health and longevity. To address this issue, I respectfully request that the city provide a certified arborist to evaluate the situation and offer guidance on preserving the health of both trees. Additionally, I would like to understand what specific plans or safeguards are in place to ensure these trees' well-being. Without proper assurances and protective measures, the risk to the oak tree is unacceptably high. Beyond the immediate concern for the trees, I have also reviewed the proposed tree buffer plan and have reservations. While I appreciate the effort to replant and restore some of the natural barrier, I am concerned about the reduced density and the visual impact. It is unfortunate that this project is taking place during the winter, as the full extent of the buffer's current effectiveness is not evident. During the spring, summer, and fall, the woods provide a dense, natural screen that significantly blocks the view of the unsightly buildings on West Avenue. Replacing this density with a thinner buffer, regardless of tree variety, will inevitably alter the landscape and diminish the current level of visual privacy and aesthetic. Additionally, I am curious about the strategy behind selecting different tree varieties for the buffer behind each house. Was this choice made for ecological reasons, aesthetic diversity, or another 1/9/25, 2:42 PM Mail - Julia Destino - Outlook https://outlook.office365.com/mail/inbox/id/AAQkADI5NDIzZGRiLTQwNjEtNGM1MS05ZmQxLTUyZTNkMzFiZDJiZQAQAA03Q%2BWf2Q1Mswn0vhz3…1/2 purpose? Understanding the rationale might help residents like myself better appreciate the long-term vision for this plan. In summary, I urge the city to: 1. Provide a certified arborist to evaluate the proposed swale's impact on my oak tree and the adjacent pine tree. 2. Clearly outline the measures in place to ensure the health and survival of these trees during and after construction. 3. Clearly outline the swale location, size and location relative to my property line. 4. Reassess the tree buffer plan to address concerns about density and visual impact, and provide further insight into the strategy behind the tree selection. Thank you for your time and consideration. I trust that the Planning Department will take these concerns seriously and will continue to work with residents to find solutions that balance development needs with the preservation of our natural environment. I look forward to your response.
