Westshore Design Engineers has been retained in order to analyze the existing roof structure for adequacy in supporting the proposed additional loading due to rooftop solar panels. The site-specific loadings are as follows: Seismic Design Category B; basic Wind Speed of 115mph; and Ground Snow Load of 50psf, per ASCE 7-16. The Applicable codes include the 2020 Residential Code of NYS. The existing roofs consist of true 2x6 at 24”o.c. with a 13’-6” span. Based on structural analysis, it has been determined that the R1 roof will require sistering the existing 2x6 rafters with a new 2x6 or installing new collar ties between rafters without existing collar ties at 1/3 of the rafter length from the ridge below the solar panel array. With the additional structural reinforcement described above, the R1 roof is adequate to support rooftop solar panels with a maximum loading of 3psf. “Unirac” L-foot anchors or equal with 5/16” diameter lags required at 48” on center maximum, staggered, with 2.5” minimum embed or S-5!
