trees and the destruction of a habitat filled with wildlife, my
biggest concern is the water. There is a large always wet pond
northwest of my property, connecting into the drainage ditch.
The level of water varies depending on rainfall and snowmelt.
During a rainstorm, the pond water comes right up to and a
little over my property line and the drainage ditch fills up rapidly
with water flowing from west-to-east. Once it rained so hard the
ditch filled to the top and water reversed flow, pushing water
into my basement through the pipe that is a gravity drain from
the sump in my basement.
There is also a wetland to the south on the property that
streams along the back of my property from South to North and
meets the drainage ditch
I understand the landowner is wanting to fill in the two wetlands
and create a retention pond along the eastern property line
behind approximately 5-6 homes. I have several questions:
1. Will the retention pond be large enough to hold the
tremendous amount of water and not over-flow, flooding our
yards?
a. However, even if the answer is yes to that question, (and I
understand there needs to be soil tests and bedrock depth
determination, it does NOT take into account being built on and
paved, creating even more runoff, will the pond have enough
capacity then?
2. Where will the water go if it does overflow? The current
drainage ditch likely cannot handle all that flow, affecting my
and others’ land and basements.
