Dear Zoning and Planning Boards of Saratoga Spring,
Having further reflected on the land variance proposal for 28 Aletta Street, I see the
responsibility for the ZBA to make a positive difference in the small, but historical, West Side
neighborhood lodged in between Aletta St. and Schrade Lane. My property, 11 Perry St., shares
a piece of the land parcel at hand. My home is 100 years old. I am told the neighborhood was
originally built and inhabited by immigrants, mostly Italian, who disembarked from the nearby
trains and worked in area quarries.
My home, and all of the others on my side of Perry St are small, single family homes, as are
two of the three homes across the street from me. The request to build three duplexes on a
piece of property that only properly supports two dwellings to keep within current city codes
would seriously alter the density and more importantly, the appeal of this small West Side
neighborhood.
Furthermore, the new owners are part of a large LLC; It is clear that the only objective for the
developer is income. Again, the city zoning and planning boards bear responsibility to maintain
green spaces and lawns in our city founded on underwater springs, some of which are steps
away from the property at hand.
Some refer to Schrade and Aletta as the “ last frontier” since it is one of the last city
neighborhoods to be revitalized. Please accept this letter as a plea to assure that Saratoga
Springs’ “last frontier” joins the ranks of other well planned and welcoming neighborhoods of
Saratoga Springs with zoning that provides for neighborhoods with green space.
Kind regards,
Lis Barbarin
