RE: 140 Grand Avenue – Partial Demolition - Middle Section
Dear Tamie:
The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation reviewed the application to demolish the
middle section of 140 Grand Avenue.
The Greek Revival, side-gabled house was originally built circa 1850 and is a
“contributing building” to the West Side Historic District listed on the National Register
of Historic Places. The middle section proposed to be demolished dates to circa 1866
due to the presence of a “Saratogian” newspaper that was found in the wall.
The Foundation has significant concerns that the removal of this section has the
potential to structurally jeopardize the front section of the residence. If the Design
Review Board approves demolition, the owner should take every precaution to ensure
that the front section is not damaged.
The Foundation appreciates the investment that the homeowners are making in this
property.
Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration.
Sincerely,
Michele Funiciello Samantha Bosshart
