The house at 165 Lake Avenue, constructed circa 1910, is an example of the Free Classic subtype of the Queen Anne style. It is located in an Architectural Review District. A character-defining feature of the Free Classic subtype is the full-width front porch with classical columns, not turned posts, and railings that typically lack the delicate, turned balusters of the other Queen Anne subtypes. Every effort should be made to preserve an original or historic porch including the original size, design, and materials. A porch and its elements, replaced due to severe deterioration, should match the original in size, shape, rhythm, dimensions, material, and quality. The use of natural materials is preferred. Since the existing railings were removed, the new railings should be in-keeping with the architectural style of the residence. The replacement railings should be limited to the minimum height required by code, and use of booster rails may be necessary to be able to have architecturally appropriate railings for the house. The square columns that replaced the existing round columns are not appropriate nor are the stairs and lattice. The Foundation recommends natural materials be used. Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration.
