Project Address 395 Broadway 12/7/23, 11:40 AM Zimbra https://m.saratoga-springs.org/h/printmessage?id=23013&tz=America/New_York 2/2 Comments To: Members of the Design Review Board meeting on December 6, 2023 Subject: The application to make exterior alterations and to construct a two-story addition at 395 Broadway. Comments: 1. It was distressing to learn that the Board has granted approval of the mass and scale of the proposed addition, which threaten to distract from, rather than enhance, the treasured aesthetic of this historic stretch of Broadway. 2. The Board is encouraged not to further dismiss the failure of the addition’s overall design to provide aesthetic continuity with the other buildings along Broadway, but to give serious consideration and weight to the serious concerns and comments of The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation (SSPF) with regard to the façade setbacks, floor heights, and fenestration of the proposed addition. 3. My objection to the applicant’s proposal to construct a permanent concrete wall, with stairs, which would limit the sidewalk width at this corner to less than 10’ feet cannot be expressed too strenuously! This is a very bad idea, not only for the it’s negative aesthetic impact, but for pedestrian safety concerns. This is a very busy street and intersection at all times, but please consider the numerous special events that bring people to Saratoga Springs and enhance its economy! Strolling Broadway is an experience in itself. To hamper the safe flow of pedestrian traffic and lessen the enjoyment of a “Broadway stroll” (already impacted by the approved scale and mass of the addition) would be a travesty.
