RE:73 Henry Street– Exterior Alteration
Dear Tamie:
The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation reviewed the application for the exterior
alteration to add a scupper and drain installation at 79 Henry Street.
The circa 1865 commercial Italianate brick building is a “contributing building” to the
Broadway Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is
located in a Local Architectural Review District. Commercial buildings of this period
either incorporated Yankee gutters or sloped the roofs to the rear to allow for significant
character defining features – the parapet and cornice – to remain unobscured.
Per the Roof Historic District Design Guidelines:
GUTTERS
• Original gutters and drainage features should be maintained whenever possible.
• If replacement is necessary, gutters and downspouts should be historically
appropriate. The half-round form is historically appropriate for many 19th and
early 20th century buildings.
• Gutters and downspouts are recommended to be painted a color to match the
nearest surface (wood trim, brick, etc.).
• New gutters and downspouts should replicate historic materials. Vinyl is
discouraged on historic and contributing structures.
• Replacing concealed, or built-in, gutters with exposed gutters is discouraged
(underline added for emphasis).
The Foundation strongly objects to the scupper and drainage pipe being placed on the
primary facade. The Foundation recommends that if a new drainage system is necessary
that it be placed on the side or rear of the building.
Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration.
Sincerely,
Michele Funiciello Samantha Bosshart
