Furthermore, the increased traffic would be a safety hazard to pedestrians. The proposed parking lot is across the street from the church. pedestrians will almost certainly cross the street to use the facility, rather than walk to the corner to cross. And at night this intersection is especially hazardous due to limited lighting in the area. Only one of the four corners at Woodlawn and Van Dam has a marked cross walk, and traffic on Van Dam backs up when there is a red light at Broadway. Cars typically block the cross walk increasing the hazard. Cars heading North on Woodlawn accelerate through the intersection, right in the path of pedestrians crossing from the parking lot to the church. The hazard is significant.
