Comments Sometime in the middle of April a sign went up giving public
notice regarding a plan to build a plastics factory across from
where we live on 74 Adams Road. Just a few days before, on
April 15, the New York Times front page reported on a plastics
plant in Brunswick, Georgia, that caught fire requiring the
evacuation of 15,000 people. Three days before that the New
York Times carried an article about a plastics plant that caught
fire in Richmond, Indiana, requiring residents there to evacuate.
Officials in both instances ordered evacuations because the
fires released fine particulates that caused respiratory diseases
and contributed to cancer. Schools were closed and shelters
had to be set up.
In other words, a week before we received notice of a plastics
plant being considered for our neighborhood, two communities
had to be evacuated due to plants producing plastic, like that
being proposed by Munter-Soleno, catching fire. Imagine if this
had occurred during the Saratoga racing season or during
Travers Week. Do you really think this is in the interest of the
people who live here? Is this a chance you want to take? I am
quite sure that the planning boards in Brunswick, Georgia and
Richmond, Indiana never thought their communities would
have to be evacuated when they approved construction of a
plastics plant. Is this a risk you want to run? Is the risk, which
would be catastrophic, worth the reward of twenty-five new
jobs?
Solano has already shown its cards. Their plans show no
respect for the bucolic nature of the community they want to
join. Their plans call for developing the area right up to Adams
Street and for invading the Conservation Development District.
Would you want a plastic plant adjacent to your house?
