RE: 569 North Broadway – Exterior Alterations
Dear Tamie:
The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation reviewed the application for exterior
alterations at 569 North Broadway.
The Greek Revival style house, built circa 1830, is a contributing building to the National
Register listed Broadway Historic District. Despite the existing aluminum siding, the
building retains the characteristics of the Greek Revival architectural style including front
gable roof, recessed entry, front door surrounded by narrow sidelights and transom.
The Foundation is pleased that the owner will remove the inappropriate aluminum siding
and restore the wood clapboard siding as well as remove the existing front stairs to
construct a new entry porch that is more appropriate. The simple entablature and columns
of the proposed porch take cues from historic documentation and matches the architectural
style and period.
The Foundation does not object to a second-story addition. However, it has concerns that
the style of the proposed bay window is not in-keeping with the Greek Revival style or the
Queen Anne / Colonial Revival two-story bay that was added between 1895 – 1900 (see
attached historic documentation).
The Foundation appreciates the significant investment that the owner is making into their
historic building. Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration.
Sincerely,
Michele M. Funiciello Samantha Bosshart
