Part I — Project and Sponsor Information ` City Landmark Designation -- Samantha Bosshart, Executive Director, Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation 1 Name of Action or Project: j Designate the "Henry Lawrence House" as a City Landmark Project Location (describe, and attach a location map): 182 Excelsior Avenue, Saratoga Springs, New York 12866 Brief Description of Proposed Action: Amendment of Article 13.9.K.4 of the Unified Development Ordinance to designate the 1869 Henry Lawrence House at 182 Excelsior Avenue, Tax Parcel ## 166.-1-14, a City Landmark. The property is eligible for listing on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The residence and carriage house are significant and intact examples of Gothic Revival architecture. Lawrence was a prominent local resident who was responsible for the development of the Valley of Ten Springs as Excelsior Park, a "garden suburb" with 100 building lots that included Sarah Smiley's lot at 166 Excelsior Avenue. Lawrence, credited with using hydrostatic pressure to pump water, marketed Excelsior Spring water worldwide. In 1870, Lawrence and his brother sold land to the Village of Saratoga Springs to construct new waterworks and reservoir, known today as Loughberry Lake, which allowed the village to continue to develop. The Amendment to the Unified Development Ordinance will designate the 1869 Henry Lawrence House at 182 Excelsior Avenue, Tax Parcel # 166.-1-14 a City Landmark.
