To Whom It May Concern:
Please note that per our inspection my inspection of the roof at 301 West Ave, Saratoga
Springs, NY 12866, I have found that the roof is (1) well past its life expectancy, (2)
improperly installed, and (3) has multiple leaks along the entire roof which are,
unfortunately, impossible to trace.
1. The metal roof is most certainly beyond its life expectancy and beyond repair at this
point. I noted that:
• The mechanical seams on the metal roof have failed, which means that there is
water entering along many parts of the roof. The deterioration of the original cedar
shake shingles underneath this shows this is the case.
• Due to the age of the roof, them metal material has become brittle and therefore
porous, meaning there are many micro-cracks that are allowing water into the roof.

• Areas of wall flashing where roofs meet dormer walls have also failed, and the only
way to properly address these issues would be to completely disassemble the
roofing system.
2. The metal roofing system was improperly installed:
• Instead of removing the original cedar shingle/shake roofing to create a proper
install surface for the metal roofing, the installer installed metal on top of cedar
shake roofing.
• This generally doesn't cause issues for the first 75-80% of the life of the roof, but
makes it virtually impossible to repair the roof once it begins to fail.
3. Due to the failed seams along the entire roof and failed chimney and wall flashings,
temporary or spot repairs are completely impossible. We also cannot tarp the entire roof,
as it would cause unnecessary damage to the siding, and would be a fire hazard with an
operating chimney.
We are therefore requesting permission to remove both layers of roofing material —failed
metal roofing and cedar shake roofing underneath - and to install new Owens Corning
Duration shingles, as detailed in our initial DRC application.
Install is also extremely time sensitive at this point, as a proper roofing install is not
recommended in the severe weather of the winter months. We are requesting permission
to install the week of 12/5 or 12/12.
