.. RE: 30 Caroline Street—New Construction
Dear Tamie:
Board of Directors The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation reviewed the revised renderings for the new
Adam Favro construction at 30 Caroline Street.
President
Michele Funiciello After reviewing the two most recent renderings, the Foundation prefers"Scheme A." The
Vice President Foundation appreciates that the applicant incorporated feedback provided by the
Linda L.Harvey Foundation and the Design Review Commission. Improvements to the design include:the
Secretary reduction in height; the improved cornice detail; the change in window fenestration,
Dmitriy Yermolayev including the use the lintels and sills, that complements the patterns and rhythms of
Treasurer neighboring buildings; and the addition brick detailing to the primary, east, and west
Tiffany Blair facades. The Foundation also appreciates the addition of windows on the east and west
Steven Dodds faadeS.
Giovanna D'Orazio
Julia Dunn
Sandra Fox However, the Foundation remains concerned with the height of the building. The
James Gold
John Haller Foundation recommends that the building be four stories in height since historic and new
Richard King buildings within the surrounding area are no more than four stories in height- 16 Caroline
Stephen Kyne
Vincent LaTerra Street, 21 Caroline Street, 54 Phila Street, 55 Phila Street, 68 Putnam Street, and the
Samantha Nass proposed construction at 53 Putnam Street. The only exception is the Pavilion Grand
Dorothy Rogers-Bullis Sheila Sperling Hotel, which is not located in a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic
Jason Thomas Places and has a different neighborhood context because its primary fagade is on Lake
Maddy zanetti Avenue, a wider street that is better able to accommodate taller buildings. Should the
James Kettlewell Design Review Commission(DRC)allow an additional floor, the Foundation recommends
emeritus
that the floor be setback from the primary fagade.
Staff
Samantha Bosshart Furthermore,by reducing the height of the building by eight feet, the floor to floor heights
Executive Director have been compressed. The Foundation has concerns with the floor height ratios and the
Nicole Babie proportion of the windows of the primary fagade and how they relate to the adjacent
Membership&Programs buildings. The floor height and scale of the fenestration should be in keeping with the
Director
surrounding buildings.
