Comments I am writing to ask you to address several questions in your re-
view of the new construction proposed for 269 Broadway.
First, what studies have been done to show the demand for
more high-end local office space? With what many are describ-
ing as a permanent post-pandemic shift to at-home work (either
full or part-time in combo with some on-site work) many com-
munities are reconsidering the necessity for new
office/commercial construction - especially similar new large
projects - as on-site work appears to be shrinking, not growing -
along with the need for new work sites. Is there a proven need
and demand for such a large building?
Also, aesthetically, the structure does not seem to make any
effort at a modern interpretation of the classic 'Saratoga style'
which brings visitors to our town to stay - and even choose to
relocate here. When will the board start to consider how new
construction fits with exisiting local architecture?
And finally, while there appears to be development funding
available for such large projects, why does the board not re-
quire developers, as a condition of project approval, to rehab
existing housing or build new units of affordable housing as part
of the cost of locating in our historic and desirable community?
The stores and services going into these new structures need
employees - yet the board seems to consistently ignore acces-
sible and affordable housing for its workforce (which will even-
tually lead employers to find other places to locate where that
workforce is available). What consideration has been given to a
requirement for any developers to create some of that housing
as a key to locating in our community? Part of planning should
be consideration of ways to assure affordable housing within
the city!
I would appreciate hearing from the board and the developer(s)
on both these important aesthetic and essential local housing
issues.
Thank you.
