Project Description The Skidmore College Swing Building project, located on Skidmore College's campus at 815 North Broadway, consists of a proposed classroom building, a fire access road, and associated paths. The building is planned to be used for classrooms and is approximately 32,500 square feet. II. Existing Water and Sanitary Sewer Utilities There are currently no utility laterals in the vicinity of the proposed building. A municipal sewer line runs north-south along the east side of North Broadway and terminates at a manhole at the north end of North Broadway. The sewer line is an 8" PVC pipe. There is an existing 24" DIP water main that runs along the north edge of the project site. This main turns at North Broadway and continues south. III. Projected Water and Wastewater Flows The table below provides information on the anticipated wastewater flow rates for the project: Description Use Rate Total Use Classrooms(260 students) 10 gpd/student' 2,600 gpd Total 2,600 gpd Average daily flow for wastewater is estimated to be 3.6 gallons per minute (gpm) based on a 12-hour day. Estimated peak hourly flow is 15.2 gpm (4.2 x average).2 Average daily demand for water is estimated to be approximately equal to the wastewater flow or 15.2 gpm. For the purposes of input into the City of Saratoga Springs water model, we offer the following estimated water demands for the project: • Average Day Demand is 3.6 gallons per minute (GPM) over the 12-hour period. • Max Day Demand is 7.2 gallon per minute (GPM) based on twice the average. • Peak Hourly Demand is 15.2 gallons per minute (GPM) based on 4.2 times the average. • Fire Flow Demand is 2,500 gallons per minute (GPM) per ISO guidelines. IV. Proposed Water and Wastewater Utilities Proposed Water Utilities To service the project a 6" DIP water lateral is proposed. It is anticipated that the Skidmore Swing Building will have fire protection via a fire sprinkler system. The new 6-inch combined fire and domestic service lateral will be brought to the building mechanical room where the domestic line will tee off and be metered. The outside shut-off valve will be north of the Skidmore Flex Building, where the wet tap is performed. A new fire hydrant is planned on the north side of the Skidmore Flex Building; the hydrant will tee off from the 6" DIP lateral. For a building protected by an automatic fire sprinkler system, the ISO states: "The NFF for commercial occupancies protected by an automatic fire sprinkler system installed in accordance with the general criteria of NFPA 13R, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, is the demand at the base of the automatic sprinkler riser" and inside/outside hose stream. Using the formula given by ISO, the NFF for this facility is 2,500 gpm. Connections and appurtenances, including mechanical joints, tees, isolation valves, thrust blocks, trenching, bedding, service connections, as well as testing and disinfection will all be specified in accordance with City of Saratoga Springs and AWWA standards. Proposed Wastewater Utilities As a part of the work, a new 6"PVC sanitary lateral will run from the Skidmore Flex Building to the manhole that the sanitary line on North Broadway terminates at. The project proposes modifying this manhole to accept this new sanitary lateral. The lateral will be installed at a minimum 2.0% slope to ensure adequate pipe cleansing. Notes 1.
