Re: 13 Bowman Street, Saratoga Springs, NY— Karner Blue Butterfly (Lycaeides
melissa samuelis) and Frosted Elfin (Callophyrus irus) Survey
Today, I conducted a survey for Karner Blue and Frosted Elfin Butterfly habitat at
13 Bowman Street, Saratoga Springs. The site is approximately 0.37 acres, with a horse
stable and mowed grass, bordered by broadleaf deciduous trees.
Pursuant to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service protocols to determine whether Karner Blue
and Frosted Elfin Butterflys are present at the site, I conducted the survey during optimal
time and weather conditions (between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. when temperatures are
65-95°F under mostly sunny skies with calm to light wind and when winds are less than
20 mph).
Karner Blue Butterfly's host plant is wild blue lupine. Karner Blue Butterfly caterpillars feed
only on the leaves of wild lupine plant. Adults feed on the nectar of flowering wild lupine
plants and lay their eggs in June on or near wild lupine plants. Frosted Elfin's host plants
include wild lupine (Lupis perennis) wild indigo (Baptista australis).
My findings are that site does not support the growth of wild blue lupine or wild indigo,
required habitat for the Karner Blue and Frosted Elfin Butterflys.
