HomeMy WebLinkAbout20200174 269 Broadway Mixed Use Public Comment (24) 8.3.21 To:Amanda Tucker, Susan Barden We reside at 268 Broadway and have lived here for eight years. We are writing on behalf of the committee. We are in agreement with the petition put forth by the board at 268 Broadway; committee members; Maree Fox, Donna Hellman, Carol Obloy, Kathleen Sonnabend, and Robert Sponzo. In regards to the mixed-use commercial building proposed for 269 Broadway, just north of Saratoga Central Catholic High School. Referring to the below concerns - In the months since, as we have learned more about this project, our concern has grown regarding the impact on traffic, parking, the aquifer and the aesthetics of this historic neighborhood.According to the applicant's own environmental assessment report, the water table is an average of 12 feet below the surface.Yet they plan to excavate for a two-level underground garage. If the aquifer is disturbed, this could pose a problem for our own basement. Based on industry standards, we expect nearly 400 parking spaces will be needed for the employees and customers of the building's office and retail tenants. But the building's underground garage will provide parking for only 70 cars, leaving more than 300 to find parking elsewhere. This will overwhelm neighborhood streets since there are no public parking facilities nearby. Hamilton Street and this part of Broadway have only one lane of traffic in each direction (as opposed to two in each direction downtown). We already have delivery trucks parking in the drive lane in this part of Broadway, causing traffic to back up to Circular St. or enter the oncoming drive lane to get around these trucks. Entering and exiting existing driveways for neighboring buildings will become even more hazardous (like our driveway!) when delivery trucks partially block them or obscure sightlines. All these problems would be alleviated if this project were scaled back significantly. And whatever is built should be compatible with the historic buildings in the neighborhood.
