Five harness horses per-
ished or were destroyed as
result of a fire shortly after
midnight which leveled a
stable • in Bowman Street,
just north of the north
horsemen's gate ht the Sara-
toga Raceway enclosure...
Two of the horses, Little Spen-
cer and Caepreak, were owned by.
Ellsworth Jones, Corinth. while An
other was Sterling Hanover, an 1.1 -
year -old trotter, aired by Dean
Hanover, which set a new mark of
2:09 3-5 for himself in a winning
race on the _last day of the..Sum-
mer meeting. Sterling Hanover
probably the best of the horses
ldst, had three wins at the Summer
mect:ng. He was owned by Mr. and
Mrs. Wilbur Hart of West Sims-
bury, Conn.. also the owners of
.Melba Diamond. which perished in�
'the fire with the Jones pair and
Clancy's Boom, owned by Frank
McGovern and Thomas Judge of
North Adams, Mass.

ed that he was destroyed by
Perry S. Miller, veterinarian.
Value of the horses was not avaiI-
able.
Lottie Spencer was a six-year-old
pacing mare with a mark of 2:10
while her amble mate. Caprck, was
B, two-year-old trotting filly, re-
cently purchased t}y Jones. which
bed not raced.
Clancy's froom was n tour -year-
old pacer which had been racing
its first season, while Melba Dia-
mond was a green, three-year-old.

terfly, a two-year-nld_. trotting
filly owned by I. Nathan Gold-
smith. this city, and Isotamlte,
a three-year-old trotting filly
owned by Miss Sylvia Sokol of
Amsterdam.
The 20 -stall harp was owned by
Joseph llromireeki, 4 Canal, Cohoes1
and wos rented to James Gorm-
ley, who trained the Hart horses.
The owner's -allied it at 57,000.
Fire started in ;he west end of

A. Jackson, from the nearby stable
of Jack Burke, White Street, this
city. Jackson aroused George
Mosher, who was sleeping in the
part of the burned barn where the
fire started.
Sleeping in the east end of the
' barn was William Wallace, :who
was awakened by an unidentified
police officer,
In addition to the loss of his
horses, Jones lost equipment val-
ued at $2,000. He carried no in-
surance. Several tons of hay and
straw also were burned.
Good work on the part of the
Fire Department saved the Jack
Burke barn,' on' which insur-
ance was carried. Fire iloba was
confined to living quarters on
the second floor, while equipment
and hay were damaged by water.
