3 RE: 378 Broadway .- Exterior Alterations

-too',.:\ Dear Tamie:
Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation reviewed the application for the exterior
alterations at 378 Broadway.
The Rockwell Putnam Building was built circa 1850 with later exterior changes made
Board of Directors circa 1890s, including the three-story oriel bay. The building was badly damaged by fire
in 1902 at which time the fourth floor was altered. It is a contributing building to the

James Gold The Foundation had the opportunity to meet with the applicant' s representative to review
Vice President &.
Secretary initial plans. The Foundation was pleased to see that many of the original features, the
oriel window bay, pilasters, and windows would remain and appreciated the applicant's
Adam , Favro desire to return the storefronts to a more historicallyappropriate appearance. However,

at that time the Foundation expressed concerns related to the permanent metal canopy
Caroline Cardene with illuminated signage, the proposed Art Deco treatment, and how the brick would be

Samantha Kercull The Foundation appreciates that the applicant addressed many of our concerns in the
Douglas Kerr
Richard King revised plans. The Foundation supports the revised plans as presented with the exception
Michelle Paquette-Deuel of the awning with illuminated signage. An early photograph shows the style of the
Cindy Spence canvas awning that the building had historically and recommends that the awning be of

the same style and material. In addition, the Foundation objects to the internally LED
illuminated signage affixed to the awning. The Foundation is concerned about the

emeritus precedent that it may set.
Samantha soh Again, the Foundation appreciates thesignificant time and investment that the
Executive Director applicant is making into the building and looks forward to the storefronts being
Nicole Babie returned to a more historically appropriate appearance.
