Dear Jennifer, I am writing on behalf of myself and my husband Scott Peterson to oppose the demolition of 65 and 69 Phila Street. Scott and I also own a historic home on the East Side and we believe that preservation of these homes is vital to maintaining the history, character and spirit of downtown Saratoga. These homes in particular given their prominent location close to Circular Street and Broadway. We also believe that allowing individuals to purchase historic properties - knowing that these are in historic districts with certain protections and duties to the neighborhood - and then neglect them and allow them to deteriorate so that they can be demolished sets a dangerous precedent. It also does a disservice to the responsible property owners who make the investment to preserve their own homes and to follow the DRC and historic guidelines. The owners of these properties have been negligent for many years and did not move forward with work that was approved on at least 69 Phila St. . Poor planning on their part should not constitute an emergency for the city and preservation. These properties appear to have been allowed to fall into disrepair through the neglect of their owners and, in my opinion, approving these permits would create a serious moral hazard.
