RE: 172 Circular Street—Roof Replacement
Dear Tamie:
The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation has reviewed the revised application for
the roof replacement at 172 Circular Street.
Board of Directors
In January, the Foundation supported the initial application to replace the existing asphalt
Adam NFavro shingles and restore the original slate roof. Subsequently, the owner submitted an
President g g
application to replace the existing roof with Statuary Bronze Blend Arrowline Steel
James Gold Roofing. The Foundation did not support the use of that product in its letter dated
Vice President
September 14,2020. It recommended restoration of the slate or replacement in-kind of
Linda Harvey-Opiteck the composition and metal standing seam roof.
Secretary
Dmitriy Yermolayev Following the Design Review Commission meeting held on September 16,2020,the
Treasurer owner contacted the Foundation to request names of contractors who could install the
Matthew Veitch TruSlate product as approved as well as those who could install a slate roof. While the
Past President Foundation does not provide recommendations,it did provide a list of 8-10 contractors.
Jaime Butler After a comprehensive search that was not productive, the owner investigated the
Caroline Cardone DaVinci synthetic slate shingle.
Giovanna D'Orazio
Steven Dodds The Foundation sincerelyappreciates the duediligence that the owner has done to locate
Sandra Fox pp g
John Haller a contractor who can perform slate roof installation. It is disappointed that the exhaustive
Liz Israel search did not result in someone being able to restore the slate roof. The Foundation
Samantha Kercull appreciates the opportunity it had to meet the DaVinciproduct representative and see the
Douglas Kerr pp pp ' p
Richard King proposed shingle.
Stephen Kyne
William McCarthy
Dorothy Rogers-Bullis The Foundation continues to stand behind its recommendation to restore the slate roof.
Cindy Spence However, there is a necessary and urgent need to address the leaking roof that is currently
Jason Thomas causing interior damage before winter. Since it is not prudent or feasible at this time, the
Foundation does not object to the use of proposed DaVinci synthetic slate or replacement
James Kettlewell in-kind of the roof.
