RE: 172 Circular Street—Roof Replacement
Dear Tamie:
•
The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation has reviewed the application for roof
replacement at 172 Circular Street.
Board of Directors The Craftsman style house, built e. 1923, is a contributing building to the East Side
Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This property displays
Adam N.Favro the characteristics of the Craftsman architectural style including a low-pitched gabled
President
roof, unenclosed eave overhangs, exposed roof rafters, tapered square stone columns,
James Gold full-width front porch, and wood shingle wall cladding. This house was built in 1914 by
Vice President Robert Clark, Vice President of Clark Textiles, a year after his brother, Alfred Clark,
Linda Harvey-Opiteck Treasurer of Clark Textiles, built his house at 29 Fifth Avenue.
Secretary
Dmitriy Yermolayev Photographs shows that the house historically had a combination grey slate and red
Treasurer standing seam metal roof(see enclosed photos). The standing seam roof was above the
porch roof/below the dormer. Due to the similar age and architectural style of 29 Fifth
Jaime Butler-Birley
Caroline Cardone Avenue as well as the family connection, most likely the color of the slate of 172 Circular
Giovanna D'Orazio Street was similar.

Sandra Fox On January 19, 2019, the Foundation enthusiastically supported the owner's previous
John Haller application to remove the existing asphalt shingle roof and restore the slate roof. The
Lizrh Foundation is disappointed that the owner is no longer proposing to restore the slate roof.
Samantha Kercull 1Fp p g
Douglas Kerr Upon review of the proposed Statuary Bronze Blend Arrowline Steel Roofing, the
Richard King Foundation does not support the use of this product. The steel product mimics a wood
Stephen Kyne
William McCarthy shake shingle with a faux wood grain, not slate. The house did not historically have a
Dorothy Rogers-Bullis wood shake shingle roof and the use faux wood grain is discouraged. The Foundation
Cindy Spence recommends that if the owner cannot restore the slate that the composition slate roof be
Matthew Veitch p
replaced in-kind and the sections of the metal standing seam roof be restored.
emeritusJaentewetl Thank you for your consideration.
